Dear Editor:
The South Carolina Highway Patrol wants South Carolina residents and visitors to keep a few safety tips in mind when traveling this July 4 weekend.
Troopers will be out in larger numbers trying to keep you safe. Motorists can expect to see troopers conducting special enforcement on interstates, secondary roadways and highways. Public safety checkpoints will be conducted throughout the area as well. Motorists should be prepared with their driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance.
Troopers will especially focus on area roadways leading to and from recreation spots such as lake areas. So far this year, 424 people have died on our roadways compared to 479 at this time last year. Fatalities are down this year in your area, which includes Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster, York, Fairfield, Union and Cherokee counties. So far this year, 32 people have died in the Troop Four area.
July 4 celebration will be beginning on Friday, which means the celebration will be drawn out over the weekend. This increases the chances of drinking and driving. So, buckle up this holiday and ensure all your passengers are buckled up as well. If you plan on consuming alcohol, plan to stay where you are or plan a ride home.
