Local GOP boss: Sanford should resign
You can add Cherokee County Republican Party Chairman Steven Blanton to the growing number of people calling for Gov. Mark Sanford to resign.
At Monday's Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Cherokee County, GOP House members Lanny Littlejohn, Dennis Moss and Steve Moss each said that Sanford should step down following revelations of an extramarital affair.
Blanton said Sanford has become a distraction to the GOP.
"Enough is enough — Governor Sanford needs to resign for the good of the party and the state and allow us all to put this continuing scandal behind us," Blanton said. "Sanford has shown he is not going to resign for himself or his family, so now leaders must take a stand for our state."
Blanton added, "Just when we thought that using a state trip to see his mistress, lying to his staff about his whereabouts, abdicating his responsibilities for nearly a week and violating the public's sacred trust was enough, Sanford is now giving further interviews announcing more inappropriate relationships and that his mistress is actually his 'soul mate.'
"It is clear to me that Sanford's personal life is in such disarray that he is not going to be able to concentrate on his official state duties, and we are going to suffer along with him. Sanford would do us a favor by moving on. "
