Gaffney gains DH split with Lancaster
Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Post 109's Jonathan Smith delivers a pitch in the first game of the doubleheader against Lancaster on Tuesday. Post 109 Junior league coach Travis Clary was eager to see his team's reaction to a disappointing loss in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday against Lancaster.
He didn't have to wait long to find his answer.
Post 109 showed its resiliency by scoring twice in the first inning en route to a 5-0 shutout and a split of the doubleheader.
"We blew too many opportunities (in the first game) and I wasn't sure how we would respond," Clary said. "But we set the tone with two runs in the first inning."
Matt Gault did the rest, tossing a two hitter and striking out six.
"He did what we asked him to do," Clary said. "He threw strikes."
Dylan Huskey singled to ignite the first-inning rally. After Alex Trammell was hit by a pitch both runners advanced into scoring position on a double steal. Clay McKowen's groundout drove in a run. Trammell later scored on a wild pitch.
Huskey and Trammell were instrumental in Post 109's three-run third inning as well. Huskey and Trammell both walked and scored on Jonathan Smith's single. Smith then scored on a wild pitch.
In the first game, Lancaster rallied from a five-run deficit to tie it at 6 in the fourth inning.
It stayed that way until the eighth when Lancaster capitalized on a couple of Post 109 errors to score five runs. Post 109 scored a run in the bottom of the inning but it wasn't nearly enough.
Post 109 had a chance to pull out the win in regulation but couldn't score after putting runners on second and third with only one out in the sixth inning.
Kaleb Earls had a couple of RBIs for Post 109.
Post 109 (8-3) will travel to Union today for another doubleheader. The first game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
