Holiday closings
The Cherokee County Public Library in Gaffney and the Blacksburg Branch will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Regular hours will resume Monday, July 6.
Iron City Ministries in Blacksburg will be closed through July 5 and reopen July 6.
The Cherokee County Solid Waste Collection Department will be picking up curbside household garbage July 3. The Cherokee County Recycling Center and Cherokee County Landfill will be closed July 3 and July 4. The Cherokee County Recycling Curbside Collection will pick up any overflow of recycling materials on Friday, July 10.
Church news
Mount Paran Baptist Church will hold a 4th of July celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday in the church's recreation area. Hot dogs will be served and music by local musicians will be enjoyed.
New Pleasant Baptist Church, 242 New Pleasant Road, will have its 11th annual Freedom Celebration Saturday, July 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. There will be a baking contest and anyone interested in participating should bring their entry to the church's Family Life Center by 5:15 p.m. that day. A prize will be awarded for the cake that is judged the best. The fun includes a bounce house, games (including water games), a slide, free food and a train. A musical, "God Bless the USA," will be presented.
The Suck Creek Praise Dance Ministry will sponsor a skate night at Skateland on Thursday, July 2, from 6-8 p.m. Admission is $4.
Senior Center
events
Television stations switched to digital on June 12. How were you affected? Can you view your TV? Do you need a converter box, do you need help installing the converter box, or do you still need the coupon to get the converter box? You have until July 31 to apply for a coupon, while supplies last. If you need help and are 60 or older, call or visit the Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., and ask for Debbie; 864-489-3868.
Fund raisers
DMW Volunteer Fire Department will have a barbecue and hash sale on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Food will be sold at the DMW Fire Station, 538 McKowns Mountain Road, and Auto Stop 105. Phone orders are welcome by calling 864-489-2194.
Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department will be selling barbecue and hash on Saturday, July 4, at the main and sub-station, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Pints are $7 each or 3 pints for $20. The main station is located at 147 Blackwell Road, 864-839- 4500, and the sub-station is located at 1135 N. Mountain St., 864-839- 4551.
