Indians fall short against talented Hillcrest and Greer

Gaffney's Josh Corry has been a standout at the FCA team camp this week. Gaffney's Josh Corry has been a standout at the FCA team camp this week. Hillcrest and Greer lived up to their billing at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Basketball Team Camp this week.

The Gaffney Indians, the state runnersup from a season ago, did not.

The Indians lost a pair of 4-point decisions to Hillcrest and Greer on Thursday.

"I'm disappointed we didn't step up when we played the best teams here," Gaffney High boys basketball coach Mark Huff said. "It bothers me to lose the games. You want to beat the best teams.

"They are good teams. We just haven't worked on things this summer that hurt us like blocking out and rebounding. We haven't done a lot of drills on those things."

In the losses to Hillcrest and Greer, the Indians also failed to convert some easy close-in shots.

"Those shots could have made the difference," he said.

The Indians weren't as sharp in the halfcourt defense as they needed to be, according to Huff.

The Indians fared better on Wednesday when they beat St. Stephen's No. 2 team and Ninety-Six. Gaffney also beat the St. Stephen's No. 1 team and Belton-Honea Path.

Huff praised the play of Josh Corry and Dominique Byers.

The camp continues today for the Indians with a 9:15 a.m. matchup with Hillcrest and a 11:15 a.m. contest against East Hendeson of North Carolina.
