Gaffney police chief discusses ways to stay safe To the Citizens of Gaffney: Recent events within our community have shown that even if you live in a quiet neighborhood or a rural community with a stable history, you can still be at risk for facing a threat of crime. We in the law enforcement community have been entrusted by you to maintain a level of safety and security for all citizens. We have been flooded with questions from many people concerning what can they do to keep their family and loved ones safe. With this in mind, the following suggestions are recommended: — Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. — Be cautious of strangers. — If an unknown person comes to your door, keep the door locked and conduct business through the door. — If the person is very suspicious or asking odd questions, call 911. — If person claims to be from a service business, call that business to confirm. — Ask for identification. — If you do not have a peephole have the person step back from the door so that you can view them from a window. — Inspect locks and windows for security. If old and worn, have replaced. — Keep garage doors closed and locked at all times. — Make sure numbers on your house are clearly visible from the street for emergency responders. — One of the most effective home protective devices at night is adequate exterior lighting. — Pay attention to barking dogs and strange noises. — Know your neighbors. Help them keep watch on their families. Don't be afraid to call them if you see something suspicious in their area. — Let neighbors know if you see a problem or suspicious person or vehicle in the neighborhood. — Do not confront suspicious persons on your own, CALL POLICE! There is always safety in numbers. If you do chose to arm yourself with a firearm: — Be familiar with the function and operation of that weapon. — Familiarize your family with firearm safety. — Keep them away from children. — Be aware of legalities of personal carry or carrying a firearm in a vehicle. — You can only carry a firearm on your person if you have a concealed weapons permit. — The law of Self Defense in South Carolina states that deadly force can be used to protect someone from death or great bodily injury. — When implementing these or other crime prevention tips, always keep your own safety in mind. Do not implement anything which may hinder or prevent your ability to escape dangerous or hazardous situations. Your family should be aware of safety features and know how to quickly overcome them in case of an emergency. The best defense is common sense. Chief Richard E. Turner Gaffney Police Department |
