A man who was found unresponsive on a city street early Sunday, just two blocks from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and in the midst of a massive manhunt for a serial killer, died of natural causes, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

A passer-by found James Thomas McGaha, 53, of North Limestone Street, unresponsive near the North Petty and East Robinson Street intersection at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner said one of his officers determined McGaha wasn't breathing and called for emergency personnel but McGaha didn't respond to any efforts to revive him.

Police and Fowler treated the situation as a suspicious death and cordoned off the area while Fowler and other authorities conducted an investigation.

Fowler said an autopsy was performed Sunday morning in Newberry.

"Mr. McGaha's death is not connected to the five homicides that have occurred over the past 7 days in Cherokee County," Fowler assured.
