It's camping season for Gaffney football team
The Gaffney football team gets back to work sharpening its passing game Thursday at a passing league at USC Upstate in Spartanburg.
Gaffney quarterback DeEdward Burris and wide receiver Joe Craig are among several returning starters participating in a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) passing league at USC Upstate in Spartanburg.
The passing league competition runs from Thursday until Saturday.
While skill players compete in the passing league, Gaffney will have 10 offensive and defensive linemen involved in a lineman's camp.
Gaffney hosted Boiling Springs for a practice session on Wednesday.
Boiling Springs is led by senior quarterback Dylan Thompson, who has verbally committed to the University of South Carolina. Running back Reggie Davis, a Chapman transfer, is another weapon in the multiple Boiling Springs offense.
Gaffney has already participated in several 7-on-7 passing leagues this summer at Clemson, Coastal Carolina, and Greensboro.
Gaffney football coach Phil Strickland is not concerned about the scores in the passing games.
"We just want to get better. There will be good competition for our players," Strickland said. "After awhile, our defensive backs start to get used to the passing routes we are running on offense. It's always good when we can go against good people and compete against different teams."
Teams competing in the football camp are Ben Lippen, Blythewood, Broome, Calhoun County, Carolina, Colleton County, Dorman (linemen), Hartsville, Hilton Head Christian, J.L. Mann, Lexington, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Wando, Whitmire and Woodmont.
The FCA camp will allow the Gaffney offensive and defensive linemen to get extra work in the lineman's camp.
The linemen will be involved in individual drills as well as a lineman's challenge with other teams.
Strickland has been pleased with his players dedication to summer weightlifting.
"We had 10 players lifting today," Strickland said Monday. "Most of the players have figured out it gets hot in (the weight room). We've had an average of 40-45 players coming here at 6 a.m. to lift weights."
