Local stars coming home for all-star parent and coaches game
Professional basketball player A.Z. Reid is headed back to a Gaffney basketball court July 18 for an all-star parent and coaches game.
Reid will join former Gaffney High players in a special all-star game at 6 p.m. as part of the Cherokee County summer basketball league.
Appalachian State guard Donald Sims, S.C. State linebacker Julius Wilkerson, Phillip Buckson and present Gaffney High ninth grade coach Phillip McHam are among the alumni on the all-star game roster. These players were members of the Gaffney High state championship teams between 2003-2005.
Reid, who plays professionally in Europe, sponsors the A.Z. Hustlers in the recreation basketball league. His younger brother, Jaron, leads the team in scoring.
The parents team boasts a few stars from the Gaffney High basketball program.
Local residents should watch out for J.C. Montgomery, Bryce Harris and Billy Bonner on the court at B.D. Lee Elementary.
"Billy Bonner still holds the record for most three pointers in a Gaffney basketball game," said Laymond Dewberry, president of the Cherokee County summer basketball youth league. "Billy hit eleven 3-pointers and scored 38 points in one game when he played for Gaffney in the early 1990s. His two kids live in Texas and Florida. They are spending the summer in Gaffney and playing in the recreation league."
The county summer basketball league has a record 22 teams competing in recreation games through July. Washington Redskins player Roger McIntosh and Reid are among several prominent Gaffney High alumni sponsoring a team in the league.
"We are very pleased to see Rocky, A.Z. and other Gaffney High graduates return home to give back to their community and be a positive example for our youth," Dewberry said. "We look forward to seeing our parents and coaches play in the allstar game and showcase the talent that has played on Gaffney High basketball teams over the years."
