A 25-year-old Gaffney man was airlifted by a Regional One helicopter late Saturday to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from the scene of a head-on collision on Peachoid Road off Interstate 85.

Gerald Lanier, 25, and a passenger, Angela Riddle, 20, both of 914 Old Post Road, suffered serious injuries in the 11:30 p.m. accident near the front entrance to the Hamrick's clothing store, police said.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin said Lanier was traveling east on Peachoid Road in a 1989 Honda when his vehicle collided head-on with a 1993 Buick driven by Rayford Marlow, 48, of 145 Rock Springs Road in Blacksburg.

Marlow was traveling west on Peachoid Road when he drove left of center and struck the Honda occupied by Lanier and Riddle, Gaskin said. Charges are pending, the officer said.

The trooper said Lanier was not wearing a seat belt.

Macedonia volunteer firefighters cut the car doors off to free Lanier. Gaskin said Riddle and Marlow were wearing their seat belts and were transported by ambulance to the Spartanburg hospital.
