Post 109 tops Orangeburg to lead 2-0
Jason Biershenk allowed just five hits as Post 109 beat Orangeburg, 10-2, in game one of the opening round of the state playoffs on Monday. Post 109 is playing like a top seed in the state playoffs.
Bubba Wright blasted a pair of homers, Michael Hughey had three hits and Post 109 downed host Orangeburg, 7-2, on Tuesday to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five opening round playoff series. Gaffney can advance to the second round with a win today at Commissioners Field.
"We don't want to make another trip to Orangeburg," Post 109 coach Jeff Osment said.
So far, Orangeburg has offered little resistance. In the opener on Monday, Jason Biershenk tossed a five-hitter and Ryan Westbrook and Hughey each had three hits in a 10-2 victory.
Despite averaging more than eight runs a game, Osment said the key has been the starting pitching.
"We've had two games and had two good performances from our starters," he said.
Westbrook earned the win on Tuesday after surviving a shaky first inning when he was touched for two runs. He quickly found his groove, allowing only hit from the second until the fifth inning.
Wright had a solo shot and McCrae Norton knocked in John Michaels to tie the game at 2 in the second inning. Post 109 took the lead for good in the third on Wright's 2-run blast. Post 109 tacked on another run in the fourth on Bobby Jackson's single that scored Westbrook, who doubled.
After Michaels' sac fly in the sixth, Norton capped the scoring with a solo homer in the ninth.
On Monday, Post 109 pounded out 13 hits. Norton and Michael Wright each had two hits for Post 109.
