An Alabama man was killed in an early morning accident Sunday after losing control of his vehicle.

Lucas Nathaniel Horn, 24, of Alabaster, was thrown from his 2003 Ford Mustang around 6:35 a.m. on Whelchel Road, approximately two miles outside the Gaffney city limits. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

Horn had recently begun working in Cherokee County and was believed to have been headed back to his apartment located on Whelchel Road when the crash occurred, Fowler said.

According to the coroner, the victim "went into a curve, lost control of the vehicle and struck a culvert before overturning three times."

Horn, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

An investigation into what caused the accident is ongoing, Fowler said, but speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributors in the crash, the coroner said.

"Our investigation indicated some things that pointed to speed and alcohol having something to do with the accident," Fowler said. "But right now we're just trying to retrace his steps in an effort to find out other things that may have had an impact on why this happened, like what he was doing and where he had been that time of morning."

Fowler has ordered a toxicology test to assist in the investigation, with his office likely to receive results within the next six weeks.

Horn is the fifth person killed on Cherokee County roads this year.
