9-year-old has taken first steps on the road to singing stardom
The church may have been different, but as he went from town to town preaching the gospel during revivals in the 1950s, there was always a song that would follow the late Rev. Isaac Wilson to pulpits all over the south — Porter Wagoner's classic Just One Rose Will Do.
Nine-year-old Dynah Dison, daughter of former Gaffney residents Dennis and Billie Joe Dison, has won talent competitions in three Southwestern states. She will sing Sunday in Gaffney at the Wilson family reunion and the public is invited to attend her performance. Though the good reverend has long passed on to glory, his memory and that of his services many decades ago will live on. Especially the song that became synonymous with his revivals, one of several his great-great-granddaughter Dynah Dison will perform at this year's Wilson family reunion in Gaffney.
"Several members of the Wilson family have requested that she sing a song that her great-great-grandfather sang at his revivals back in the 1950s," said Dison's grandmother, Donna Williams. "The song was Just One Rose Will Do, and that will be one of many songs she will perform."
Starting her singing career around the time most children are packing their bookbags in preparation for their first day of school, Dison recorded her first album shortly after her 8th birthday.
Now 9 years old, the McAlester, Okla., resident has made a name for herself in the Southwestern portion of the United States, performing at festivals in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas and claiming awards at talent competitions in those three states. She has also performed at the Texas Opry in Magnolia and took the stage in April at the Strand Theater in Shreveport, La., a venue dedicated in honor of the Apollo Theater in New York City.
The young talent is currently working on a song written by Blacksburg resident Tommy Lanier in addition to sharpening her skills, which her grandmother said are getting better each day.
"Dynah recorded several songs last October," Williams said, "and she is 10 times better now."
Dison is the daughter of Dennis and Billie Joe Dison, formerly of Gaffney. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Paul D. Wilson and the great-greatgranddaughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Isaac Wilson.
The Wilson family reunion will be held at the residence of Vernon Wilson on Darby Road. All are invited for the performance.
