Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Post 109 catcher Bryan Parsons (11) receives congratulations after scoring against Clover in state playoff action on Monday at Commissioners Field. In its run to the state championship, Gaffney High played its best in mustwin situations.
Post 109 is showing that same ability.
A night after dropping the series opener at home to Clover, Michael Hughey had five RBIs and Ryan Westbrook pitched a complete game as Post 109 tied the series at 1 with a 16-6 victory on Tuesday.
Post 109 will host pivotal game three today at 7 p.m.
Leading 9-6, Post 109 broke open the game with a seven-run ninth inning.
"We poured it on in the ninth inning," Post 109 coach Jeff Osment said. "Once we got it rolling, we kept it rolling."
Gaffney rolled over Clover by pounding out 22 hits. Lee Gerwick was 5 for 6. Teammate Bryan Parsons had four hits and Westbrook and Hughey each had three.
"We made good contact, and if that will continue, good things will happen," Osment said.
Good things happened early on Tuesday, as Post 109 scored at least one run in each of the first three innings. Hughey singled home Westbrook to put Post 109 up 1-0 in the first. Gerwick and Westbrook had RBI singles when Post 109 tacked on a two more runs in the second.
Michael Hughey Clover kept pace, tying the game at 5 after five innings. But Post 109 added two runs in the sixth and eighth innings before sealing the win in the ninth.
In the series opener on Monday, Post 109 rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5.
It stayed that way until Clover's Brooks McCarter scored the go-ahead run in the 11th on a balk. Harrison Morris knocked in the insurance run with a double for the 7-5 victory.
Clint Medlin started and allowed three unearned runs in six innings for Clover. Chaztin Venezia got the win with five innings of relief. After allowing two runs in the eighth, he settled down and didn't allow the run the rest of the way.
Jason Biershenk went eight innings for Post 109 before giving way to Bubba Wright, who pitched the final three innings.
Michael Wright had a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs and John Michaels had two hits and two RBIs for Post 109.
David Stone and Ben Pendleton each had three hits to lead Clover.
Corey Crissone will get the start for Post 109 today.
