Property appraisal appeals process nearing an end
Soon property owners unhappy with their property assessments won't have county tax assessor officials to kick around anymore.
Cherokee County Tax Assessor Rob Weaver said his office has reviewed about 70 percent of the appeals filed by county property owners who want their reassessments lowered.
"We are definitely making progress," Weaver said.
Once the appeal has been reviewed, the property owner will receive a letter stating either the property assessment will stand or that it has been changed.
If no change is made to the property value or the property owner feels the new value is still too high, then the property owner has 30 days to file another appeal.
Weaver said he hopes to complete the appeals process by the end of August. Weaver noted his office must complete the appeals in a timely manner because the auditor needs the information to set the county millage rate for tax notices.
The tax assessor's office appraised 32,798 properties, including mobile homes. Those appraisals were based on 2007 market values.
