Lady Indians display depth during summer workouts
Shooting guard Kierra Phillips and her Lady Indian teammates finished 13-9 at three team camps this summer. The Gaffney High girls basketball team hopes to turn a successful summer into a long postseason run.
The Lady Indians have completed their summer program, including team camps at USC-Upstate and the University of North Carolina. The Lady Indians posted a combined 13-9 mark at the team camps.
"When we were all there, we were very strong," Gaffney girls varsity coach Stacey Parris said. "Even when we had to pull up some jayvee players, we were still very strong."
Depth, then, will apparently be a strength of this year's squad.
"We could sub out five at a time," Parris said.
As many as 24 players, including varsity and jayvee players, participated in summer workouts.
"We really have worked hard this summer," the Gaffney coach said. "The players want to get better and want to be successful."
Parris added she's encouraged by the progress made by some of her younger players.
"They did some things this summer they haven't done before," she said.
To achieve the team's ultimate goals, however; Parris said the seniors must take on more of a leadership role - on and off the court.
The players will take a break before beginning eight weeks of conditioning drills when school begins in mid- August.
