SHELBY - J.B. Philbeck Sr., 74, of 1211 Horsetrail Drive, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Smith and Carrie Tessenner Philbeck. He was owner and operator of J.B. Philbeck Roofing for 48 years. He had a special love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and his horses.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Wayne Philbeck and Billy Philbeck, and two sisters, Patsy Moore and Geraldine Terry.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annie Doloris Philbeck of the home; two sons, J.B. Philbeck Jr. and wife, Kay, of Gaffney and Steven Dale Philbeck of Shelby; a daughter Sandra Crawford and husband, Rob, of Shelby; two sisters, Joyce Dover and husband, James, of Shelby and Kay Jones and husband, Donald, of Statesville; two brothers, Kenneth Philbeck and wife, Shirley, of Forest City and John Smith "Peanut" Philbeck of Statesville; five grandchildren, Jamie Brian Philbeck of Gaffney, Steven Dean Philbeck and wife, Shauna, of Shelby, Lora Ann White of Shelby, Josh Crawford and wife, Kelli, of Shelby, and Joseph Crawford and wife, Lonnie, of Shelby; seven great grandchildren, Skylar Philbeck, Valarie Lovelace, Deanna Love-lace, and AJ Lovelace Jr., Malia Crawford, Mason Robert Crawford and Madison Crawford; and three sisters-in-law, Ann Philbeck of Texas, Brenda Humphries and Jean Philbeck, both of Shelby.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 24, from 12:30-2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, conducted by Chaplain Len Byers. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
