Fire truck damage assessed
The Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department was still awaiting word Thursday on the extent of damage to its Squad 91 rescue truck in the wake of a Tuesday night accident.
Fire Chief Clay Greer said he met with an insurance adjuster Thursday and expected to hear a decision from the department's insurer in the next two business days.
"It's got a lot of body damage and some of the equipment was tore up," Greer said.
Though the truck is out of service, Greer said the department will not be impacted greatly in the short term since equipment from the rescue truck was moved to other vehicles and some vehicles already haul similar rescue gear.
The Squad 91 truck crashed on Highway 29 on Tuesday evening while firefighters from Blacksburg and the CKC Volunteer Fire Department were responding to a structure fire on Silver Ridge Road at the height of a thunderstorm passing over Cherokee County.
The 18-year-old firefighter driving the Squad 91 truck hydroplaned on standing water near the base of a hill on Highway 29, causing the vehicle to go out of control, turn 180 degrees and flip on the side of the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
