It was the 22nd annual award given by the group of Gaffney High School alumni who made the Small Fry Restaurant on Cherokee Avenue their "hangout" during the 1940s and 1950s.
The recent GHS graduate will use the $4,000 grant to pursue a music degree at Winthrop University. Jeter was a four-year member of the Beta Club, was ranked 19th out of 409 classmates and attained perfect attendance during his 12 years in school.
A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he was also a staff member of the school literacy magazine and pianist for the jazz band. A member of Galilee Baptist Church and son of Lewis and Carolyn Jeter, he is pianist for the Gospel Choir and is involved in the music and youth ministry of his church. He has served the community as a Meals on Wheels and Salvation Army volunteer.
AFJROTC instructor Randall Byars, in his recommendation to the scholarship committee, said, "Elliott is a dynamic young person and has demonstrated superb leadership skills during his time at Gaffney High School."
