Longtime Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones said the defensive line is his biggest concern this season. Longtime Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones said the defensive line is his biggest concern this season. Longtime Gaffney High defensive coordinator Dan Jones doesn't hesitate when responding to the question about his biggest worry this season.

"Defensive line is the biggest concern. I think we'll be okay in the secondary and linebacker, but I just don't know who will step up along the defensive line," said the high-energy Jones. "We just got to give them the chance."

Jones said he's hoping that jayvee standout Tim Davis will use his large frame (6-5, 320 lbs.) to plug the gaping hole at defensive tackle. Another jayvee starter, Kurt Robinson, is a possibility to fill another defensive line spot.

Both Davis and Robinson will get their chance to impress the coaches when preseason practice begins today. The Indians open with a lengthy 2 1/2 hour session focusing on more mental work than physical since contact is restricted until Wednesday when players put on pads for the first time.

"We're in three days of helmets and shorts, so we do what we can do," Jones said.

The Indians return only two starters, Denard Smith at rover and Kris Brow at free safety. Chris Adams is back after seeing substantial playing time at linebacker.

"We'll have a lot of new faces," Jones said. "The kids really been working hard in the offseason. We had a good turnout this summer and I'm looking forward to the season because we'll have some kids who have never played before."

The Indians will have Saturday off but will return to the practice field on Monday for two sessions.
