A motorist was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by way of Regional One helicopter Tuesday afternoon following a crash on Concord Road.

The name and condition of the driver was not immediately available at press time.

Firefighters from the Grassy Pond and Buffalo volunteer fire departments assisted the S.C. Highway Patrol in working the accident. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from his Toyota Camry, which was heavily damaged.

"Extrication is not super complicated, but takes a little time," Grassy Pond Assistant Fire Chief Glen Smoke said. "The thing that made it difficult for us was the position he was situated in between seats in the car."

The vehicle is believed to have traveled more than 1,000 feet before coming to rest, Smoke said. The vehicle knocked over several mailboxes and grazed some trees.

Dozens of family pictures and shattered glass were scattered around the vehicle.
