Strickland gives team high marks after couple of practices

Phil Strickland Phil Strickland Although the Indians have just a couple of practices under their belts, head coach Phil Strickland isn't shy about sharing his enthusiasm.

"I'm pretty pleased," Strickland said. "The kids have a great attitude and they are in great shape."

But Strickland's praise didn't stop there, adding this glowing assessment.

"Although we have a lot of new kids, we are way ahead of last year," he said. "The kids seem to know what they are doing."

Last year, the players were adjusting to the new no-huddle offense brought in by new passing coordinator Perry Woolbright.

Unlike this year, the Indians also are more settled at quarterback, with DeEdward Burris emerging as a potential star and Joey Copeland as a more than adequate backup.

Graduation left a gaping hole along the offensive and defensive lines, but Strickland said he's pleased with the progress of the newcomers.

"Their footwork appears to be much better," he said.

The Indians donned their pads for the first time this morning and didn't waste any time in putting them to good use during the famed Oklahoma drill, a 1-on-1 contact drill between offensive and defensive linemen.

"This separates the men from the boys," the Gaffney coach said. "We'll see who likes to hit. Anybody can look good running around in shorts."

The Indians return to the practice field for two morning practice sessions on Thursday before a scrimmage at Greer at 6 p.m. on Friday.
