Feds ask that bond be denied
Federal prosecutors asked a U.S. Magistrate in Charlotte last Wednesday to deny bond for a 52-year-old prison parolee involved in a shootout with Cherokee County deputies following a recent kidnapping incident.
Jerry Douglas Case is charged with four counts of kidnapping under federal law. He was brought before a U.S. Magistrate last week for his initial appearance in the federal court system.
According to the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Western District of North Carolina, Case was advised during the hearing of the charges against him and Case requested the appointment of legal counsel.
Case is accused of kidnapping four people, including a grandfather, his 28 year-old daughter and her two children, from a fishing spot in Belmont, N.C. on July 17. He allegedly forced them to drive him to various locations, where he stopped for beer and cigarettes, before they ended up at a convenience store off Exit 96 of Interstate 85 in Gaffney early July 18.
The four captives escaped from Case at the Cherokee County store and called police, who tracked him to a swampy area near the interstate. Case allegedly fired at pursuing Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies with a pellet gun and officers exchanged fire, reportedly striking Case twice. Federal prosecutors are asking that Case be detained in federal custody without bond pending the resolution of his case.
Family members of Case told Charlotte news channel WBTV that Case, who spent more than 20 years in prison on a murder charge before he was paroled in 2008, told them he believed he was going to be sent back to prison for a driving under the influence charge.
Case allegedly told his family that he kidnapped the people in Belmont to have them drive him to Tennessee so he could say goodbye to his own family before fleeing to the west, WBTV reported.
