The $1 million Buford Street resurfacing project is expected to be completed by the end of August. The $1 million Buford Street resurfacing project is expected to be completed by the end of August. 'Road Closed' is a sign that no motorist wants to see, especially during August when schools reopen.

That's the reason Sloan Construction is maintaining an aggressive work schedule to complete the $1 million Buford Street road improvement project by the end of the month. The project affects traffic coming to and from Gaffney Middle School and B.D. Lee Elementary School.

Plans were unveiled last month to resurface Buford Street from Frederick Street to Young Street, which will result in lane restrictions and detours.

The work will be done in three sections.

Sloan Construction engineer Scott Armstrong said resurfacing work on the section of street from Overbrook Drive to Young Street was expected to be completed by Thursday.

Next week, crews will shift their attention to the section from Hwy. 18 to Brown Street. Plans call for the roadway to be milled and resurfaced. Paving work will begin Aug. 17 and wrap up Aug. 21, according to Armstrong. The road will remain open but will have lane restrictions, he said.

But that won't be the case when crews begin work on the section of Buford Street from Overbrook Drive and Brown Street. Armstrong said the roadway will be closed from Aug. 24-28 to all motorists but those who live along that section.

Armstrong said that time line could be affected by inclement weather.
