Local fire officials are looking into a fire that destroyed a vacant South Logan Street home Thursday morning.

The fire erupted shortly after midnight, with Gaffney firefighters arriving to find the home located on the 600 block of Logan Street fully engulfed in flames.

"When we arrived, the fire was completely involved," said Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis. "There was not much we could do except douse it with water from outside."

The house was a total loss, Ellis said.

The fire is believed to have started in an area toward the center or back half of the structure, though an exact cause has not yet been determined.

"We can't rule out anything in these types of incidents," Ellis said.

No one was injured.

The fire has been ruled as "suspicious" in nature as the home had been vacant and without utilities for an extended period of time. A report has been filed with the Gaffney Police Department, standard procedure for fires involving abandoned buildings.

"As is the case with all abandoned buildings, we do a police report because there lies the possibility of vagrants using the property," Ellis said. "Even if they had no intention of this happening, they were not supposed to be there in the first place."

According to Ellis, it is unlikely more will be found in the case.

"It was a foggy night last night (Thursday), and it was likely hard for neighbors to see extinguished smoke coming from the house," Ellis said. "We can talk to neighbors and others as to who could have possibly went in the house, but if no one is seen leaving there really is little we can do."

Ellis estimates his department is dispatched to vacant house fires once a month, with the majority of instances occurring later in the year. To avoid similar incidents from happening, the fire chief encourages property owners to secure their houses to keep people from coming and going as they please.
