Second '1st Friday' tonight
If there's one thing local members of historically Black fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi wants to get across, it's that they are willing to invest themselves in the success of the community.
Seen on various occasions throughout the community picking up trash or providing a shoulder to lean on for many Cherokee County teens, the group is all business when it comes to making a positive impact.
But there are also times when that business mode intersects with the human want to let their hair down and have a little fun.
Wanting a place for local professionals to congregate and share ideas, the Kappa League began hosting "1st Fridays" at Uptown Party Events in downtown Gaffney.
Net proceeds go to benefit community outreach programs and a scholarship fund provided by the local Kappa League, the fraternity's national service program.
"We just wanted to provide a place for mature professionals looking to mix and mingle with like-minded individuals in an upscale social setting," said local Fellowship of Christian Athletes director and member of the local chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Pierre Salmon. "It's a clean event where the grown folk can have a little fun."
The first event was held July 3, at a time of heightened tensions in Cherokee County as law enforcement officials were busy tracking down a serial killer.
However, that development did little to scare an estimated 60 people from walking the event's red carpet.
"It was a good event, especially with everything going on," Salmon said. "People came up to us afterward and said they felt safe. Much of that has to go to law enforcement officials who constantly came to the venue and asked if everything was fine.
"It's always good to have such respected people being there and able to call at any moment."
Music for the Friday, Aug. 7, event will be provided by Charlotte-based Power 98-FM DJ Tab D'Biassi. Appetizers will be available. However, Salmon emphasized this is an event for "grown folks only."
"You have to be 21 and older to attend," he said.
Doors will open at 8 p.m.
