Indians ready to hit someone else
The Indians will travel to Greer today for a scrimmage, which is expected to begin at 6 p.m. The scrimmage is expected to finish up around 8 p.m. It's not the marquee match of the Byrnes Rebels, but Gaffney High football coach Phil Strickland thinks Greer is the perfect foe for today's scrimmage.
"They are a pretty physical team and they'll be tough defensively," said Strickland, whose team will travel to Greer for the 6 p.m. scrimmage.
Strickland said the scrimmage will likely last about two hours - plenty of time for Strickland to evaluate his players.
"The kids have been hitting each other since the spring and they are getting tired of hitting each other," he said. "Now, we'll see how we react against other folks."
The Indians were hoping to debut their new H-back look on offense, but that may have to wait because of a rash of injuries at linebacker.
Yes, linebacker.
One linebacker is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery while another suffered a twisted ankle in practice this week.
The likey H-back, Robert Grandy, has been moved to linebacker to sure up the weak spot.
Strickland said DeEdward Burris and Joey Copeland will get the lion's share of the snaps at today's scrimmage.
They'll be throwing to a group of wideouts who are making strides during each practice, according to Strickland.
But it'll be the line where Strickland and the coaching staff focus much of their attention. Graduation losses have left gaping holes along both lines.
But Strickland said he's been optimistic about the progress the newcomers have made. After today's scrimmage, Strickland will get a better handle on the extent of the progress.
