Former Gaffney and Wofford standout Andy Strickland is battling for a roster spot with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. Former Gaffney and Wofford standout Andy Strickland is battling for a roster spot with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. Gaffney High's Andy Strickland already proved he can excel at the collegiate level.

Can he do it in the NFL?

Strickland is answering that question as the Jacksonville Jaguars opened preseason camp this week.

Strickland, who finished last season with a team-high 34 catches for 656 yards and seven touchdowns for the Wofford Terriers, signed with the Jags as a free agent in June.

He participated in a OTA (Organized Team Activity) on June 18 and has been living and working out with the Jags other rookies in preparation for preseason camp.

According to Strickland, the Jaguars have 10 wide receivers on their preseason roster and plan to keep either six or seven.

Strickland admits his biggest task is learning a new system and a thick playbook.

"We only had five plays at Wofford, so this is completely different," he said. "The system here is so complex. I just have to make sure that it becomes second nature to me."

Another adjustment he'll have to make quickly is gauging the arm strength of rocket-arm NFL quarterbacks, including David Garrard of the Jaguars.

"He has a cannon," Strickland said.

For most undrafted free agents, the surest ticket to an NFL team is on special teams. Strickland said he will be no exception.

"It's something I've done before at Wofford," he said.

Strickland will be wearing No. 14 for the Jaguars.

Strickland and the Jaguars open the preseason with a game at Miami on Aug. 17.
