Two squad cars damaged during chase
All ended well for Gaffney Police Department officers Saturday, taking a suspect into custody after a chase on Hyatt Street.
However, the job came at a price, with two police cruisers now headed for repairs.
Gaffney police officers were dispatched to Hyatt Street around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and began pursuit of a 2000 Honda Accord believed by authorities to be a stolen vehicle.
According to Lance Cpl. Brian McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol, the male suspect, whose name has yet to be released, refused to stop for officers. During the chase, the suspect made an abrupt turn, striking a Gaffney Police Department vehicle before going down an embankment just off the roadway.
The suspect again made contact with the police cruiser after traveling back up the embankment and back onto Hyatt Street before hitting another vehicle, a 2006 Volkswagen.
Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner said the suspect attempted to flee the scene on foot before being tracked down by authorities. While being transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center, the man complained of chest pains and was subsequently taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Another police cruiser was damaged during the incident, this one striking a utility pole after traveling down an embankment along Hyatt Street while trying to assist a fellow officer in the pursuit.
"The police vehicle with blue lights and sirens activated was travelling through an intersection and attempted to avoid traffic and did not make contact with any other traffic, but swerved to the left of the roadway and went down an embankment into a utility pole," McDougald said.
