Man released from hospital, but now faces DUI charge
William K. Moore, 35, of 34 Sunrise Drive, Gaffney, was discharged from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Thursday, a little more than 48 hours after being involved in a horrific single vehicle accident.
Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the S.C. Highway Patrol said that Moore is charged with driving under the influence.
Moore was traveling east on Concord Road when he lost control of his 2004 Toyota Camry, ran off the road and struck a tree before his vehicle overturned, police said.
The car came to rest in a yard.
"I was washing dishes and all of a sudden it sounded like a loud clap of thunder," said local resident Betty Houey.
Firefighters from the Grassy Pond and Buffalo volunteer fire departments had to extricate Moore from the vehicle, which was heavily damaged in the accident.
"Extrication is not super complicated, but takes a little time," Grassy Pond Assistant Fire Chief Glen Smoke said. "The thing that made it difficult for us was the position he was situated in between seats in the car."
The driver's vehicle is believed to have traveled more than 1,000 feet in the accident, Smoke said, knocking over several mailboxes and taking bark off trees. Dozens of family pictures and glass were scattered around the scene.
Moore was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
