Jeremy Robertson compiled an impressive 7-0 record in mixed martial arts fights. But his goal isn't to join the UFC.

Robertson would rather share his knowledge of ju jitsu than use it to beat an opponent in the octagon.

Robertson, a native of McDowell County, N.C., is offering classes in ju jitsu three times a week at Eng's School of Self Defense on North Granard Street.

Robertson, a purple belt, has 13 years of experience in Brazilian ju jitsu, popularized by the Gracie family.

"It's submission wrestling," he said. "The difference in ju jitsu and wrestling is that you can fight off your back."

In wrestling, a win is secured by pinning an opponent's shoulder to the mat. In ju jitsu, a victory is earned by either tap out, choke or joint lock.

It's a martial art that doesn't require superior strength or size.

"Any size person can do it," Robertson said.

Robertson offers classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for ages 5 to 16 from 5 - 5 :45 p.m. The adult classes follow immediately. He's also available for private lessons for those interested in mixed martial arts fighting.

Clint Bridges, a City of Shelby police officer, has been taking the ju jitsu classes for some time.

"It's just so useful for my job and it's great exercice," Bridges said. "It's martial arts that makes the most sense for everyday life."

Gaffney's Josh Gibson sees his future in mixed martial arts.

"I take the class because I want to be a cage fighter," Gibson said.
