Coggins wins club title on first attempt

STAFF REPORTS

Todd Coggins stared down the heat, a tricky golf course and the 2- time defending champion to capture the Gaffney Country Club Championship on Sunday.

Coggins entered Sunday's final round with a 4-shot lead after a 68 on Saturday. He was steady on Sunday, shooting an even par 72 for a winning score of 140.

Runnerup Jason Shackleford shot a 73-72 to finish five shots back.

Two-time defending champion Chris Tomey of Spartanburg was third.

It was Coggins' first try at the championship.

"It's a strategic golf course," Coggins said. "You have to hit the fairways. You had to battle the heat and the greens were tricky."
