Limestone lacrosse coach featured speaker
CERINO Limestone College men's lacrosse coach Mike Cerino will be the guest speaker for a Steak 'n Stake fundraiser Thursday at the local Boys and Girls Club.
Tickets for the steak dinner fundraiser are $25 and will help support club programs. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the club's 18,000- square-foot facility on Pecan Street. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Boys and Girls Club Director Vance Hammond had brought in former Clemson football coach Danny Ford and Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers from the University of South Carolina to speak at previous Steak 'n Stake fundraisers. This year, Hammond said he asked Cerino to speak in recognition of the tremendous support the club receives from Limestone College.
Cerino founded the Limestone College lacrosse program in 1990 and has built the Saints into one of the top teams in Division II. The men's lacrosse team won national championships in 2000 and 2002. The team advanced to the national finals this past season.
"We have developed a great partnership with Limestone College. We had five athletic teams volunteer to work with our club members this past school year," Hammond said. "We feel community involvement and support for our club plays a vital role in helping our young people develop into good citizens in our community. Mike Cerino will speak on character education, a topic which fits right in with our mission at the Boys and Girls Club."
The Steak 'n Stake fundraiser name has a double meaning.
Brown's Packing Company provided the steaks for this year's dinner. Community members can show they have a stake in the future of today's youth by helping support club programs.
The Boys and Girls Club serves 400 students a day through a Teen Center and afterschool programs at Mary Bramlett and B.D. Lee elementaries.
"We are looking forward to a good time," Hammond said. "This will give our kids a chance to show off the Boys and Girls Club and speak with community members about the many programs which are having a positive impact on the lives of our young people."
