The Gaffney Indians appeared in midseason form during the early going of their scrimmage Tuesday against Greenwood. But their performance after a lengthy rain delay is one that head coach Phil Strickland won't remember fondly.

"We did real well in the first part of the scrimmage, but we came back and didn't do well," Strickland said.

Gaffney outscored Greenwood 3 to 1 during the first part of the scrimmage. Greenwood scored the only two touchdowns after the rain delay.

Strickland said the Greenwood defensive line took over the game.

"We held our own early, but (Greenwood) has one of the better defensive fronts I've seen in a while. We just didn't play well and that's a concern because (a delay) could happen during a regular season game. I don't whether it is because of our youth or what."

Gaffney quarterback DeEdward Burris was sharp early, showing the running and passing ability that makes him a dangerous playmaker. But, after the rain delay, Burris had little time to find his receivers.

Defensively, the Indians' tackling is still a concern.

"We have to get more aggressive to the ball," Strickland said.

On a positive note, the Indians suffered no injuries during the scrimmage.

Gaffney will practice today and Thursday in preparation for the Border Showcase at Crest, which has been moved from Saturday to Friday. The Indians will play Crest at 9 p.m.

The lineup includes an 8 p.m. matchup between Byrnes and Shelby. Polk County and Spartanburg will open the jamboree at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
