Blacksburg coach still searching for pieces
Mickey Moss Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss is searching to put together the missing pieces before the season opener against Walhalla next week.
The roster is filled with youth and inexperience following the loss of 13 seniors, including the starting offensive backfield and several starting linemen. The coaching staff has spent practices working with players on the fundamentals of blocking, tackling and learning the playbook.
Blacksburg has held scrimmages in the past week against St. Joseph's, Traveler's Rest and Liberty. Blacksburg opens the season Aug. 21 at Walhalla.
"We have a lot of work to do. We are so young," Moss said. "We are working on every facet of the game. We need to improve in all areas."
Blacksburg hosts the Iron City football jamboree Friday at 6:30 p.m. at T.A. Campbell Stadium. Teams participating include Landrum, Broome, Southside Christian, Kings Mountain and St. Josephs. Each team plays one half.
Landrum plays Southside Christian in the first half followed by Broome and Kings Mountain. Blacksburg will meet St. Joseph's in the jamboree's final matchup.
Moss has emphasized strength and conditioning in the offseason so the Wildcats can be more successful with a power running game. Defensively, he wants his players to be more physical and tackle better.
"We are working hard and teaching our kids the fundamentals of football," Moss said. "We need to come off the ball quicker and be more physical."
