Former Gaffney standout paying dividends as coach
Former Gaffney High and Tusculum College standout Jarvis Littlejohn will serve as a volunteer coach this season. Jarvis Littlejohn just can't stand still. First, he offers a suggestion to a defensive lineman. Then he talks to a linebacker.
The former Gaffney High and Tusculum College standout isn't shy about sharing his knowledge and expertise as a volunteer assistant coach for the Gaffney High Indians.
Gaffney High head football coach Phil Strickland said Littlejohn has adjusted quickly to his role as coach.
"He's been a good help," Strickland said. "He came back and told us that he wanted to get involved with the program. He came back and wanted to be a part of it. He's doing a good job of relating to the kids."
Littlejohn sure has the credentials. He was an all-region pick for the Indians and made one of the biggest defensive plays in school history when he stopped the Sumter quarterback on a goal line play to secure the 2003 state championship for the Indians. He also starred at Tusculum, where he collected several all-conference honors.
Littlejohn isn't receiving any pay but he's already paid big dividends, according to Strickland.
The coaches sought Littlejohn's insight when they changed some defensive schemes this year.
"Jarvis really understands the game," the Gaffney head coach said. "We picked his brain on what coverages he ran in college when he played linebacker."
Littlejohn began his coaching duties during spring practice. In the summer, Littlejohn accompanied the team during the 7-on-7 passing tournaments. This season, he'll serve on the ninth-grade coaching staff. But Strickland said Littlejohn also will lend a hand wherever he's needed.
"He looks to be a great asset for us," Strickland said.
