Stars set to shine at Border Showcase
Joe Craig Gaffney fans might want to consider bringing binoculars or a telescope because there will be so many stars out at tonight's Border Showcase.
Six of the state's top 25 football recruits will be in action at the jamboree, including four from the Byrnes Rebels, who will play Shelby at 8 p.m.
Marcus Lattimore of Byrnes is the clearcut No. 1 prospect. The 6-0, 210-pounder piled up 2,314 rushing yards and scored 30 touchdowns last year and is considered one of the top running backs in the country. He's whittled his final list to North Carolina, South Carolina, Auburn, Oregon and Penn State.
His teammate, 6- 4, 255 pound defensive lineman Brandon Willis, is considered the second best prospect in the state, Willis, who had 13 sacks a season ago, has narrowed his college choices to California, Florida State, UCLA, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Another Byrnes Rebel, defensive end Corey Miller, is ranked among the top 10 recruits in the Palmetto State.
Miller is 6-3, 230 pounds and has already committed to Florida State. He had eight sacks and 33 quarterback hurries last season.
The final member of the Byrnes Rebels to appear on the recruiting list is wide receiver Nick Jones, who is considering Michigan, South Carolina, Georgia Southern and Northern Illinois.
Jones had 64 catches for more than 800 yards in 2008.
Gaffney wide receiver Joe Craig is considered among the state's top 15 recruits. The 6-0, 160 pounder has 4.32 speed. He's already verbally committed to Clemson.
Spartanburg, which will open the jamboree against Polk County, is led by quarterback Cornelius Jones.
The 6-2, 185 pounder will play at Michigan next season after piling up more than 1,700 total yards of offense as a junior.
