Blacksburg football players go through an agility drill in a workout before practice started in August. The evaluation period is almost over for Blacksburg players hoping to claim a starting position for the Aug. 21 season opener.

Blacksburg hosts the Iron City Jamboree tonight at 6:30 p.m. at T.A. Campbell stadium. Admission is $6.

Landrum will open the jamboree against Southside Christian. Broome faces Kings Mountain in the second half. Blacksburg will play St. Joseph's in the final half.

"We have an excellent jamboree," Blacksburg football coach Mickey Moss said. "We are excited about the teams participating. Each half will be played like a regular game. All the kicks will be live."

Blacksburg coaches will use the jamboree to evaluate players and identify areas where the team needs to improve before next week's season opener against Walhalla.

"We are very young. We still have a lot of work to do," Moss said. "The jamboree will give us a chance to see our players in a game type situation."

Blacksburg remains a work in progress entering the jamboree. The Wildcats struggled against McBee last week, but turned in a solid effort defensively Tuesday against Liberty and Travelers Rest.

"We started out a little timid. Our players really got into it and played better as the scrimmage went on," defensive coordinator Tony Sullivan said Wednesday. "We saw some good hits on defense. We just need to keep getting better."
