Beachgoers beware

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Authorities are warning South Carolina swimmers to watch out for jellyfish.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports it's jellyfish season through August.

Beach patrol director Ralph Wagner says more people are getting stung off Hilton Head Island than usual for the month.

Wagner says the local jellyfish are sea nettles, which are saucer-shaped with brown or red pigments. Their tentacles can extend several feet.

He says lifeguards are trained to flush the sting with ocean water, followed by a mixture of water and vinegar, to neutralize the venom.
