Ewing Middle School assistant principal Tim Phillips died unexpectedly on Sunday.
Phillips, 32, passed away the day before county students began a new school year.
Doctors in Lexington have sent off blood samples for further testing to determine the cause of death.
Phillips, 32, was entering his third year as Ewing Middle assistant principal. He was a science teacher at Gaffney Middle and Ewing Middle schools. He previously worked as a teacher at Blacksburg Elementary.
"His faith was evident in his work ethic and his approach in dealing with students, co-workers and parents. He had a very positive outlook on life, an outstanding personality, a great sense of humor, and was a man of integrity," Cherokee County School Superintendent Dr. Bill James said. "Mr. Phillips was an excellent teacher and administrator and was highly respected by students, faculty, staff and parents. He was very committed to making an impact in his community."
Phillips is survived by his wife, Michelle, and son Caleb. He was an active member at Crestview Baptist Church in Gaffney.
"His leadership and guidance will truly be missed by co-workers, students, family and friends," James said. "The Cherokee County School District Administration and School Board of Trustees extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
