Horse trainer killed
A 27-year-old horse trainer died Monday afternoon from severe injuries suffered in a horse riding accident at a North Green River Road farm.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Randi Kay Hogan was riding in a fenced pasture when her horse apparently went out of control and ran into a grove of trees.
"Ms. Hogan was struck in the neck and head by limbs before being knocked off the horse," Fowler said.
Emergency personnel from Upstate Carolina Medical Center and the Cherokee Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded.
Hogan, a native of Odessa, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred at about 3:05 p.m.
A co-worker at the farm found Hogan lying on the ground and unresponsive, Fowler said.
"My investigation indicates the victim was a very experienced rider and horse trainer that stayed with the animal after losing control," Fowler said.
Hogan's death was ruled accidental.
The incident occurred at Green River Farm, which advertises itself on the Internet as a family owned and operated horse farm, training facility and stable.
A call placed to the farm was not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.
Hogan's obituary appears on Page 8.
