Graham, Petty receive Mary Gaffney Knuckles scholarhips

Shachia Graham Shachia Graham Shachia Graham, daughter of Klechia Henderson and the late Johnny Henderson, and Donald Wayne Petty II, son of Mandy Montgomery, have been named recipients of the Mary Gaffney Knuckles Education Scholarship.

Graham, a 2009 GHS graduate, will be attending the University of South Carolina Upstate, pursuing secondary education in mathematics. Her academic achievements include completing her senior year with a 3.5 GPA while taking Calculus Honors, Physics Honors and other courses. Graduating 27th in a class of 410, she has also been named a Coker College Scholar, Gardner-Webb University Scholar, and qualified for a LIFE Scholarship.

At GHS, she was a member of the Band of Gold, Gospel Choir, Teacher Cadet Program and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She attends Limestone Baptist Church and is very involved in numerous youth activities there. Her dream is to become a teacher and she has indicated how greatly she has been impacted and molded by her mathemat- ics teachers during her school career.

Petty will be attending Winthrop University, where he will major in middle school education. His areas of concentration will include English and social studies. Petty has a competitive grade point average and is described by his teachers as "dedicated, determined, driven, enthusiastic, well-rounded, having remarkable character and integrity, impeccable study habits and a perfectionist."

Donald Wayne Petty Donald Wayne Petty Petty was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the GHS Kappa League for the past four years. In addition, he was a member of the Spanish Club, Teacher Cadet Program, 2008 Presidential Election activity, and served many hours in the GHS Adopt- A-Highway program.

The scholarship is named in memory of Mary Gaffney Knuckles, a pub- lic school teacher in Cherokee County for 45 years. She began her teaching career in one- and tworoom schoolhouses in 1936 and dedicated her life to promoting educational and religious opportunities and helping others.

The Rev. London C. Knuckles, widower of Mrs. Knuckles, indicated that this gift is a "spring that hopefully will become the mighty Mississippi River and that these young people will become not good, not better, but the best they can be."

The scholarships are funded by contributions, and donations may be made by contacting the Knuckles family at 864- 489-0164 or 185 Shady Grove Road, Gaffney, SC 29341.

Applications are available in the guidance offices at Blacksburg and Gaffney high schools and it is hoped that more scholarships can be offered next year.
