Satisfy your hunger, help the homeless
After being fed morsels of inspiration beneficial to their souls during Sunday morning worship services throughout the county, the next question many families often ask is "where are we eating today?"
Most Sunday afternoons during the year, Daddy Joe's Beach House BBQ & Grill is not part of the lengthy list of options for the stomachs of hungry families to be satisfied by the local eatery's course of barbecue, chicken and other tasty foods because it's usually closed on Sundays.
As with all situations, there are exceptions to the norm, and Aug. 23 is one of those as Daddy Joe's again opens its doors to customers August 23 in an effort to raise funds for Miracle Hill Rescue Mission — Cherokee County.
The mission, which opened in 2000 as Harbor of Hope, can provide lodging for up to 24 women and 20 men at one time, with 20 overflow beds available should they become needed.
This year will be the third consecutive year the Floyd Baker Boulevard restaurant has lent its support to help Miracle Hill, a practice also done from time to time for various charities and nonprofit organizations around the county.
Miracle Hill Rescue Mission — Cherokee County Director Murl Lehman said his organization is fortunate to have local businesses like Daddy Joe's in their corner.
"We're definitely glad to have them help us out again this year; we've seen this fundraiser blossom more and more each year," Lehman said.
An estimated 500 people visited the local eatery for the fundraiser last year, which raised enough money to cover the mission's expenses for a week, according to Lehman. "That's a lot of food, shelter and compassion for a lot of people," Lehman said.
Though the eatery will be open, it will not serve off the menu for this occasion, instead offering a barbecue buffet consisting of chopped pork barbecue, Calabash chicken, baked beans, hush puppies, French fries, cole slaw and tea. Lehman said to also expect a lot of delicious desserts compliments of several local churches.
"There will be a lot of sugar-free and regular desserts," Lehman said. "If there's one thing I know, the people in this community, especially the church ladies, can make some great desserts; so of course, I'm expecting the desserts to be good and disappear quickly."
Serving lines will run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost for the meal is $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than age 8.
Tickets will be sold at the door, but the public is encouraged to buy tickets in advance by calling Miracle Hill at (864) 488- 0376.
Tickets may also be purchased at Cherokee General Dentistry and Troy Gaffney Insurance.
