Indians look lethargic in scrimmage
Photo by LARRY HILLIARD Gaffney quarterback DeEdward Burris tries to break free from a Laurens defensive lineman during Tuesday's scrimmage. Gaffney coach Phil Strickland has his priorities: One is that football must be played with emotion.
His Indians lacked that enthusiasm in a scrimmage Tuesday against Laurens, which is coached by former Gaffney offensive coordinator Greg Lawson.
"I just thought we were real lethargic," said Strickland following the 3-hour simulated game-type scrimmage. "We finally settled down. But even when we started playing well, we were emotionless."
The teams kept score during the first two 15-minute quarters. Quarterback DeEdward Burris ran for an 80-yard touchdown, tossed a 45-yard TD pass to sophomore Quinshad Davis and Kenard Lipscomb had a 34-yard TD run to give the Indians a 21-10 halftime lead.
Following a 15-minute break, the teams played their second string units for most of the third quarter and didn't keep score.
After turning the ball over twice in a jamboree loss to Crest on Saturday, the Indians committed a couple more turnovers against Laurens.
"Turnovers are a concern," Strickland said.
Defensively, the Indians' inexperience has led to some missed assignments - and big gains by the offense.
"We are still making mistakes that will get you beat because of our inexperience," Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones said. "I'm pleased with the effort, but we are just going to have to take our lumps until we get more experience."
Wide receiver Joe Craig, who also is seeing time in the secondary, did have an interception for the Indians.
The Indians return to practice today and Thursday in preparation for the jamboree here on Friday. Gaffney opens the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28.
