Project delayed
A delay in approval from the state Department of Transportation has put the brakes on the Buford Street resurfacing project.
Contractor Sloan Construction had hoped to complete the project by the end of August. But Sloan Construction crews stopped work earlier this month after completing only one of the three sections of work.
Sloan Construction engineer Scott Armstrong said Tuesday crews will resume work after Labor Day on the section from Hwy. 18 to Brown Street. Plans call for the roadway to be milled and resurfaced. The road will remain open but will have lane restrictions.
Armstrong said to avoid traffic congestion during weekdays his crews will spend a weekend in September to finish the section of Buford Street from Overbrook Drive and Brown Street.
"That way we won't affect school," he said.
The $1 million project affects traffic coming to and from Gaffney Middle School and B.D. Lee Elementary School.
Earlier this month, work was completed on the section of Buford Street from Frederick Street to Young Street.
