The Indians beat Woodruff, 20-13, on a last-minute touchdown pass. The Gaffney High coaching staff couldn't have scripted the winning touchdown pass any better.

The coaches have been encouraging quarterback DeEdward Burris to be more patient in the pocket to allow his receivers to get open.

He did just that when he hit Joe Craig, who had slipped behind the defense, for a 35-yard touchdown and a 20-13 victory over pesky Woodruff at the American Community Bank/Cherokee County Jamboree on Friday.

"I'm proud of DeEdward," Gaffney coach Phil Strickland said. "It just loosens the defense up because they have to honor his running ability."

Burris still did plenty of running, breaking a couple of tackles on his way to a 42- yard touchdown run that tied the game at 7 with 2:43 left in the first quarter.

The Indians took the lead on their next possession when sophomore Quinshad Davis hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Burris. But the extra point was missed, keeping the score at 13-7.

The Wolverines took advantage of some inexperience in the Indians' secondary when Amos Moates got behind the secondary for a 60-yard touchdown with 7:39 to play. The score remained tied at 13 after Gaffney's Denard Smith blocked the PAT.

Another special teams play loomed large in the outcome when Gaffney's Josh Harris pinned the Wolverines at their own 11 after a strong punt.

The Wolverines had a three and out, as the Indians took over at their own 39 with 3:44 left.

After picking up first downs on runs by Burris and Kenard Lipscomb, the Indians faced a crucial third-and-12 at the Woodruff 35.

On the play, Burris faded back to pass, scrambled around for a second and spotted a wide open Craig for the game-winning touchdown.

Woodruff quarterback Jake Lambert, who completed 11 of 21 passes for 181 yards, had more than enough time to answer the score. After a pass moved the ball near midfield, the Wolverines lost yardage and momentum on a fumbled snap.

The Wolverines opened the scoring by marching 81 yards on eight plays to go ahead 7-0 on Lambert's 6-yard TD pass to Josh Hyman.

Strickland, who was critical of his team's emotional level in a loss to Crest at the Border Showcase a week ago, liked the level of enthusiasm against Woodruff.

"We are still making mistakes but the talent and emotion are there," he said.
