Former Gaffney High and Wofford standout Andy Strickland was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday after suffering a back injury in an exhibition game on Saturday. Former Gaffney High and Wofford standout Andy Strickland was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday after suffering a back injury in an exhibition game on Saturday. Andy Strickland was expecting to receive treatment on his injured back at the Jacksonville Jaguars training complex on Tuesday.

Instead, he was driving down Limestone Street to a 3:30 p.m. appointment with Gaffney physical therapist Joe McKowen.

Strickland, the former Gaffney High and Wofford University standout wide receiver, was waived injured by the Jaguars on Monday, two days after injuring his back on a pass near the sideline in an exhibition game against Tampa Bay.

"I leaped for the ball and got my legs pushed out and landed on my tailbone," Strickland said.

Strickland spent Saturday night in the hospital undergoing tests that showed he had a pars fracture and a herniated disk - a condition he played with during his stellar career at Wofford.

He was released from the hospital on Sunday and received treatment at the team's training facility that same day. He expected to receive more treatment on Monday, but was told to report the office of the general manager, who broke the bad news.

Strickland said the general manager liked his skills but had to waive him because the team was thin at wide receiver heading into Thursday's exhibition game at Philadelphia.

"I'm upset," Strickland said. "If I could have rehabbed for a couple more days, I could be back."

Strickland said his agent is busy on the phones, seeking a team interested in signing him. He can be picked up by any NFL team, but the Jags now must wait until week 10 of the season to resign him.

He said he has no desire to play in Canada or the newly-formed UFL and that he's more confident than ever he can play in the NFL.

"I got a little taste of it now," he said.

Strickland was making an impact with the Jaguars, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in june. He had two catches in the team's exhibition opener against Miami and a 16-yard reception against Tampa Bay.
