School gets bug-free bill of health
Blacksburg Elementary School received a clean bill of health Thursday from state health inspectors following a bug problem earlier this month.
Summer roof repairs at Blacksburg Elementary stirred up cockroaches, water bugs and other insects nesting underneath the roof. This prompted the school district to bring in an exterminator to eliminate the bug problem prior to the resumption of classes.
Blacksburg Elementary received a perfect score of 100 Thursday during a health inspection by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC.)
"DHEC inspected the school cafeteria as well as the whole building," Blacksburg Elementary Principal Janice Keller said. "We received a 100 on the health inspection. We are pleased with the results. Our school cafeteria workers were very concerned and take a lot of pride in making sure the cafeteria is as clean as possible."
The state health department oversees the permitting and inspection of more than 16,664 retail food establishments in South Carolina. The health inspections involve school cafeterias, restaurants, grocery stores, retail meat markets and delicatessens.
The food safety ratings in South Carolina are based on a numerical score and identified as A, B or C.
The top "A" rating is given to businesses with a score between 88-100. According to DHEC, these facilities typically exhibit very good to acceptable levels of cleanliness in the unannounced routine health inspections.
