Church news

Broad River Baptist Church, 2315 Legion Rd, Smyrna, will have homecoming services Sunday, Sept. 6. Speaker will be a former pastor, the Rev. Dale Welch. A covered dish meal will served after the morning service with a singing following the meal.

The Senior Choir of New Mt. Sinai Baptist Church will celebrate its anniversary Sunday, Sept. 6, at 3 p.m. Speaker will be Pastor C.A. Wallace.

The Phillips Family, The Watkins Family and The Bates Family will present an evening of gospel singing at CADA Park on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 6-9 p.m. Fuzzy Franks and Big Daddy Hawgs will cater the food. A portion of the proceeds will go to Kops Kids for Christmas. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Gethsemane Family Life Center.

A new program is starting at White Plans Baptist Church, 206 Soap Stone Road. "Awana" is for all children, newborn to 12th grade. Opening night will be Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 6-8 p.m.

Support groups

AA meetings are held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. and Wednesday and Saturday at noon in the building behind Limestone Street United Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. If you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend.

Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. For information call 1-800-828-5689.

Barbecue

Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department will be selling barbecue and hash on Monday, Sept. 7, at the main station and sub-station, starting and 8 a.m. and continuing until it's sold out. Pints are $7 each with a special of 3 pints for $20. The main station is located at 137 Blackwell Road (839- 4500) and the sub-station is located at 1136 N. Mountain St. (839-4551).

The fourth annual Labor Day fundraiser for Cherokee County Meals on Wheels, sponsored by Gaffney Masonic Lodge No. 186, will be held Monday, Sept. 7, from 7 a.m. until at 219 E. Floyd Baker Blvd. Barbecue is $8 a pint; hash is $8 a pint and barbecue slaw is $3 a ping. All proceeds and donations go to MOW, a nonprofit organization feeding over 400 homebound local residents daily.

Veterans news

Veterans, are you getting all the VA benefits to which you are entitled? The local VA office can help you obtain lost discharges (DD-214s), awards and decorations and much more. Visit the Elks Lodge on O'Neal Street on Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon to learn more about the benefits you earned or contact your county Veterans Affairs Officer.

Red Cross classes

The Cherokee County American Red Cross will offer the following classes this month: Adult CPR with Standard First Aid., Monday, Sept. 14, 6- 10 p.m. (fee); Infant and Child CPR, Sept. 15, 6-10 p.m. (fee); Community Disaster Educator, Sept. 13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.. (no fee); New Volunteer Orientation, Sept. 8, 10-11:30 a.m. and Thursdays, Sept. 10, 6-7:30 p.m. (no fee); Shelter Operations, Sept. 11, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (no fee). Blood drives

The Piedmont Blood Center's Bloodmobile will be at the following locations this month: Friday, Sept. 4, Palmetto Bank, 9 a.m.-4 pm.; Friday, Sept. 11, 2-8 p.m., Shrine drawing at Walmart in Gaffney; Thursday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Brookview Healthcare Center, Gaffney.

Holiday hours The Cherokee County Public Library in Gaffney and the Blacksburg branch will be closed Monday, Sept.7, for Labor Day.

The Cherokee County Solid Waste Collection, Recycling and Landfill departments will be operating on a regular schedule Monday, Sept. 7.

The City of Gaffney Sanitation Department will observe Monday, Sept. 7, as a holiday. Monday's route will be picked up on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Iron City Ministries will be closed Sept. 4-13 for Labor Day holiday and renovations. The office will reopen on Monday, Sept. 14. Normal hours are 9 a.m. until noon.

Senior Center news

The Gaffney Senior Center will sponsor an AARP Driver Safety Class on Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 from 1-4 p.m. Cost for AARP members is $12 and for non-AARP members the cost is $14. All checks should be made payable to AARP and payment should be made on he first day of class. Call the senior Center, 489-3868, to reserve your spot. The Senior Centers of Cherokee County needs your help. Between now and Oct. 15, visit www.ilovechristiecookies. com and nominate the Senior Centers as your favorite charity. One vote per email address is allowed, so ask family, friends and business acquaintances, etc. to vote for the Senior Center of Cherokee County. Contact person will be Joan Wood.
