The new YMCA project has advanced a bit with a review of the building plans by city officials.

Gaffney Zoning Administrator Tony Lavender said several minor items need to be corrected before the city signs off on the plans.

"We found nothing major," he said.

YMCA officials announced in May they had secured financing for the $4.6 million project.

CEO Mike Goforth said he finalized the bank loan and closed on the second of two parcels on Whelchel Road. The 5-acre parcel will be used for recreational ball fields, he said.

No specific date for the ground breaking has been announced.

Yeargin Potter Shackelford is the project's general contractor.

The project will include a gymnasium, fitness center, water park, a teen center and multipurpose rooms to expand programs offered for children and senior citizens.

Outdoor recreation fields and a walking trail will be built around the YMCA.

The site plan includes space so an indoor swimming pool and racquetball courts can be built in the future.

An outdoor water park with interactive elements is one of the unique features at the new YMCA. The park includes a water slide, sprinklers, playground equipment and an aerobics area.
